Chapter 6 and 7 post

To be an effective teacher in today’s educational world, many teachers have to find different means to better teach their students. In chapter 6 we learn about different learning environments to best help students learn the materiel that will be covered. In one example of a learning environment is Community-centered. This learning environment is centered on knowing the environment in which the teacher is teaching. Knowing how the community that is in the school as well as what is outside of the school, will let the teacher know the culturally aspects that affect a child’s learning, because the aspects of their culture that play a factor in their pre-conceived knowledge beforehand. Another learning environment is Assessment-centered is where the teacher provides feedback and revision to answers that students may give from previous knowledge and pre-conceived notions. This is used a times on tests or papers that are critique to provide improvements students can make.

Chapter 7 deals with effective teaching, where teachers use different ways to prove things to their students and not disprove their prior knowledge, just do it in away to where the student understands what is being discussed more clearly. Also, it discusses teaching in a variety of ways and not just the standard way, because as discussed in chapter 5 all students have different ways in which they learn. In the History portion of the lesson, the book discusses different ways to teach the students about history instead of just memorizing the facts and then forgetting about them. An example is the debate the teacher in the book uses to have her students put themselves in the places of people who were involved in the pre-Revolutionary War. This method allowed the students, to understand what this moment had to be like for the people who lived in this period. This method allowed for students to understadnd the material better just memorizing it.

Both of these chapters deal with the ways in which to help students better understand what is being discussed by their teachers and using it out in the world.

Reflection about the brain

The brain is the most complex computer that we can have. Everything that we do has to come from here or none of the activities, that we deem minimal will occur. The phrase “use it or lose it” refers to the brain because the brain is of such value. The chapter that we have read discusses how the brain is always in constant use. On page 114 of the book it discusses how early experience in development is vital, because these early learning moments will help the brain to grow and also help the students learn as well. In one of the articles I read about making a memory certain factors can help people to remember things. This ties into how these early memories are vital to helping us to recall certain things. Like from chapter 3 of our book memory can help people to recall things learned in class better than they normally would. Furthermore, in people who are deaf, the auditory part of the brain receives help from the other parts to make up for the loss of hearing. In a video “how does the brain change in people who are deaf, we learn how the others parts of the brain help the person to better remember sign language than if that person could hear. So yes the book and articles to agree with how we must always use our brain in what we do or when the need arises we may not succeed in recalling certain information.

Children are always learning everyday. From reading, listening to others, talking to other people, or other ways, children are always learning about things in life. As teachers it is our job to find ways in order to help them learn in some ways. The problem though is that every student has different intelligence’s. Group 10’s video about multiple intelligence’s is necessary to know because everyone learns in different ways. The problem is that in schools most teachers just have lessons that are aimed at one form of learning, instead of knowing how to bring in all forms of intelligence. The video showed projects that could be used to help all students with different means of intelligence use them so all students benefit. At one time it was believed that babies could never learn and that they were never learning. Now a days, this theory has been proven false as babies are indeed learning, they just need help in doing this. In Group 8’s link about reading stories to babies, this method actually helps them learn words, sound, pictures, and other ways that can help them to learn the material. In our book on page 106 Box 4.6 a grandfather is reading to his grandchild and through the reading he has the child sound out what he is saying and uses the pictures to relate to things in real life. Like the link about reading, this box can use this method to help infants learn more than they already know. Through the links, videos, or the readings, all children learn in different ways and at young ages. It is important as our jobs as teachers in order for us to find ways to use their ways of learning and how to help them in order for our students to gain better understandings and make learning more enjoyable and easier to comprehend.

Experts are able to know about certain material such as the chess pieces that were set up in a certain way the chess experts were able to figure out where each of the pieces were to go. The novices though did not have any idea, so during the best they failed multiple times until they figured out were the pieces where to go exactly. Though when a new pieces were put in different places the experts struggled like the novices did before them. What it means to be an expert is that you have more of a knowledge of something than someone else does. This though can not change anything if the knowledge is different than how they are used to, which then turns them into novices themselves. So, regardless experts are not as different as novices in certain materials.

Strategies of learning are essential for teachers as they have to find the best ways to help their students learn the material that they will be discussing. As a student, specific ways of learning are vital to helping them understand and use the material that is important in the discussion. In chapter three of our book, there is mention of the Metacognitive approach, where students and teachers take turns discussing the topic of discussion and break down what they have learned amongst fellow peers. Using the MetaCognitive rings real because, in classes here at the university, there were moments where the method was of use in classrooms. Also, the fact that in any school, students are expected to learn the material by memorizing it, and then when the material is no longer needed, it becomes obsolete.

In the website The Atlantic, a teacher discusses the use of repeated use and building, where students either rehearse what it is they are studying or connect or associate they things that the teachers teach them, such as using words or places to remember the names of certain places. So, if students used these methods, then they will remember the material better then they did before. Another sight on transfer learning is Machine Learning, where the topics of supervised, unsupervised, Predictive, and “Pure” Reinforcement learning show different ways in which students can learn in the teaching of the material.

Going through the course, each of these learning styles will be of use, trying to learn how to become better teachers and helping students to spit out the material.

Improving my Digital Footprint

Technology is a vital part of today’s education society. Every lesson that is taught in today’s education uses technology in some way. Every year new technology comes out each year to improve the learning for all students. Distance learning is one way in which learning has changed in the years as some students can not reach their classes, because they may live far away, so, using video recordings and computer technology will help to put them right in the classroom from wherever, they are. If there are more technology that can be of use to help learning go to the site, http://modernconsumers.com/types-classroom-technologies/, where future teachers can find new ways to bring about the best ways for their students to learn. While, we are discussing the topic of technology it is important to remember, to be safe when using it. In today’s world two billion people all over the world use the internet, mostly those are children who use the internet for certain reasons. While today’s children may know more about technology that kids from thirty years ago, there is still that unknown about who or what is on the other side of the computer. In the googling of myself I found that there is hardly any information on me at all. If parents or principals were to see that they may not know what to think of that. This is why I should seek to add more things about myself using the technology so, there is no fear of what people think I could be and have false impressions. This can also be to all students and children out there as they must be taught how to properly use technology today so they can be safe. Have discussions with them, have classes where safe ethics can be taught, and other ways to keep the younger generation safe. While there may be more kids who are technology inclined today that in years past, the need for safety is still important.

Teaching and learning have always gone hand in hand. What people teach to others can be learned and used later in someone’s life. However, in today’s education, that way does not seem to work as well as it should. The reason for this is because some teachers can not use the knowledge that they have and transfer it to the minds of their students effectively. Also, some students do not want to learn as it does not interest them, or they come into a class with preconceived notions about the topic that is of importance in certain classes. In the reading of the first two chapters of our book, the discussions on how to better help teachers and students to work cohesively together are the main topic of each chapter. Early in chapter one, the book discusses new ways that have come out and inquires that are now used to help the students better learn. For instance, on page nine in the book, the discussion of how some people know more about specific topics is how some may come more quickly than others. However, this can cause an issue as with prior knowledge of particular material, and the student may not want to grow in their learning. They can use new methods such as role-playing, Scamper, Reversal, and other means, from the website 14 Creative Ways to Engage Students, to figure out ways in which to learn. So, to help get these two forms working better together again, these methods could be of us.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
