To be an effective teacher in today’s educational world, many teachers have to find different means to better teach their students. In chapter 6 we learn about different learning environments to best help students learn the materiel that will be covered. In one example of a learning environment is Community-centered. This learning environment is centered on knowing the environment in which the teacher is teaching. Knowing how the community that is in the school as well as what is outside of the school, will let the teacher know the culturally aspects that affect a child’s learning, because the aspects of their culture that play a factor in their pre-conceived knowledge beforehand. Another learning environment is Assessment-centered is where the teacher provides feedback and revision to answers that students may give from previous knowledge and pre-conceived notions. This is used a times on tests or papers that are critique to provide improvements students can make.
Chapter 7 deals with effective teaching, where teachers use different ways to prove things to their students and not disprove their prior knowledge, just do it in away to where the student understands what is being discussed more clearly. Also, it discusses teaching in a variety of ways and not just the standard way, because as discussed in chapter 5 all students have different ways in which they learn. In the History portion of the lesson, the book discusses different ways to teach the students about history instead of just memorizing the facts and then forgetting about them. An example is the debate the teacher in the book uses to have her students put themselves in the places of people who were involved in the pre-Revolutionary War. This method allowed the students, to understand what this moment had to be like for the people who lived in this period. This method allowed for students to understadnd the material better just memorizing it.
Both of these chapters deal with the ways in which to help students better understand what is being discussed by their teachers and using it out in the world.
